The Rise of the Pleasure Beach That Wanted to Inspire Gaiety
By Isla Campbell

Having achieved the status of the UK’s number one tourist attraction, with over six million visitors annually, Blackpool Pleasure Beach has grown from its humble beginnings in the late 1800s to become renowned for its plethora of white knuckle amusement rides, live shows and various entertainment venues.

The forty two acre site, bought by Alderman William George Bean in 1896, has remained in the family ever since. Having survived two World Wars, the amusement park has thrived from continued investment and the addition of new rides and shows, proving its dedication to moving with the times.

Testimony to its popularity, Blackpool’s Pleasure Beach was named joint fifth best amusement park in the world in 2007 by the Amusement Today Golden Ticket Awards – the only British park to be included in the awards – as well as being identified as the world’s second best seaside park.

Housing over 125 rides, ranging from the £12 million Pepsi Max Big One rollercoaster to the more traditional rides, Pleasure Beach also plays host to a variety of live shows. These include ice dancing in the world’s oldest purpose built ice theatre, and the new stage production, Forbidden; overall there is a range of attractions catering to most thrill-seekers tastes.

The year 2000 saw the Pleasure Beach’s biggest investment to date – £15 million – whilst 2004 saw an additional £5 million investment, which was used to re-theme and refurbish it. A wide variety of celebrities have also shown their support for the park, with personalities like Jonathan Ross and Max Clifford officially opening new rides.

Although the amusement park reaches its peak visitor numbers in the summer months, when it is open week-long, the management also cater for the colder months, by including a range of different events. These comprise the September Illuminations Special, which runs every Friday in September and sees the park open until 2am; the October Spooktacular which again runs on Friday nights in October; as well as Winter Weekends.

And, with so much to see and do, not only at the Pleasure Beach, but also in Blackpool itself, the scenic town is well worth a visit. Reported to be the most popular seaside resort in Britain, it attracts a figure of around 10 million tourists per year, keen to experience the wealth of entertainment venues and festivals on offer. The town is also home to the Blackpool Tower, which was opened in 1894 and has remained a dominant part to its skyline ever since.

With tourism forming a major part of the town’s economy, it could be said that Blackpool is well prepared for the annual influx of visitors, with legend having it that one can find more hotels and B&B beds in Blackpool than in the whole of Portugal!

However, with the amusement park being the dominant attraction of the town, it may be wise to search for hotels near Blackpool Pleasure Beach, in order to get a prime location and first pick of the rides!

How to Arrange the Perfect Holiday
By Isla Campbell

When it comes time to book your next holiday there is a lot to think about. Which country do you want to visit? What kind of holiday do you want to have? Do you want a relaxing beach holiday with nothing in particular to do – or is an active holiday more the kind of thing you are after?

Whatever fits the bill, you need to start looking for that type of holiday in the country of your choice before you do anything else. Matching up the holiday with the country can be as easy as finding the best beach available, or it might be harder – if you want to go to Greece for example, finding the best location to go mountain biking might take a bit of research if you want to book the best experience possible.

You also need to think about what type of accommodation you would like to stay in. If you are the type of person who likes to know that every need will be catered for without you having to worry then a hotel might be the best option. And if you are going on an active holiday then you might like to opt for a hotel that has a spa and a swimming pool on site to help you unwind as well!

Alternatively you may prefer to opt for something that is more traditional to the country you are visiting. For example, if you are visiting Goa you could stay in one of their beach huts on stilts for a really authentic experience. Be prepared for less of the mod cons though!

It can help to make a shortlist of the things you want to do and then find out what the best location for a holiday would be. You also need to think about the type of person you are when planning your ideal holiday. Some people will book a trip based on what their friends or family members tell them about a particular location, but you need to bear in mind that what they enjoy may be very different from what you would enjoy, and you could end up having a less than satisfactory holiday as a result.

While it’s a good idea to visit your local travel agent to see what they have available in the way of brochures, the best way to find your ideal holiday is to look online as you can do some research into the possible destinations that make it onto your shortlist.

Of course it depends on the type of person you are as to what you will enjoy the most. If you want the height of luxury then go for all inclusive hotels to stay in. If you want to cook your own meals then a B&B would be more suitable.

In the end we all have our own ideas about what makes the ideal holiday; so long as you find out what yours are you’ll have a great time.

Bikini Babe Mid-Life Crisis

“I needed these images to be processed before I could reach this point in understanding where I am going with my art. The answer is not yet fully revealed to me, but it has to do with my own sexuality. It has to do with my age and my deepest fantasies and desires.

As I write this I am viewing this image above the text box and am listening to my iTunes in “shuffle” mode. Suddenly a piece of music comes on. A haunting little 2 minutes and 17 seconds of beautiful, soft, pensive music. I stop to look at what it is. From the movie “Girl With a Pearl Earring” composed by Rachel Portman. How appropriate this music is. How appropriate to the story line and to my creative state of mind. For anyone not aware, the story is about the artist Vermeer and his love for light and colour. But mostly his intriguing relationship with a young model who was also a house-maid for whom he develops a special interest that goes beyond just making her his subject for the famous portrait by the same name.

So I set the iTunes to “repeat 1″ and am letting this haunting piece of music accompany me as I view this image and go back to writing about my own feelings. I am suddenly filled with great emotion and sadness. These are feelings of desire and longing. But longing for what. I pride myself as an individual of high morals and yet I am feeling lust and arousal. Feelings that are socially frowned upon. Are my intentions less than honorable? Is the artist supposed to feel this way toward his subject. What is my motive in choosing to photograph the female nude? What artistic benefit is in that? Why am I questioning myself? My sadness turns to anger. What was a feeling of tenderness towards myself, my art and my model has become a source of questioning in an accusatory fashion. Questioning In a way that makes me feel ashamed and immoral when trying to answer. What or who am I angry at? My feelings are real and deep. I feel myself normal in every way. I observe society around me and feel that my life fits very well within it. I am assuming, therefore, that these are normal feelings that come with a reassessment of self and where I am in my life.

The answer seems blunt and brutal, but obviously common enough to have it’s own name. I am uplifted by that fact. “Mid Life”. It is a good term. It implies that if your life until now has been pretty good, you can expect yet another and equally good amount of life to follow before having to accept the ultimate end of life.

But there is another term. “Mid Life Crisis”. Is it this that I am experiencing? My adult sons would, perhaps, express it that way. But is it a crisis? Maybe a need to not accept my age. A need to feel young again. So I am given a dose of youth through having this soulful, young, female beauty laying naked before me. Awakening desires that have been dormant since the time when my age and such desires were defined by youth. No not a crisis. It is coming to terms. Acceptance of age and a celebration of wisdom that comes with age.

My music is still repeating, as its meaning changes along with my mood, as I am writing, which affects how I feel, as I am going through this self-analysis.

I will not arrive to a conclusion this time, but will continue to do my art and continue this process of discovery of self through my art and my emotions.

Where this will lead me I have yet to find out.

Another day begins. The safety of night in my cozy bed is exchanged for daylight, the messenger, streaming through my slightly turned up blinds. What will this day deliver? I am enjoying my bed too much to exchange it for coffee.

I feel warmth and sensuality. Not a care in the world. Just soft, smooth, intimate sensuality.

I have been getting an awful lot of faceless favorites lately. I wonder how many people are actually reading my texts. How many people are just collecting images for their own archives. How many images will later resurface on someone else’s stream, blog or website without even as much as a credit to the photographer who created them. Like many other creative photographers of original material, these are real concerns for me.”

While the photo is “NOT” one of the author’s (I unfortunately cannot post the art here),I feel a kindred spirit in his words.I would suggest viewing his profile Here. His work as well as his words are to be envied.

Sol Lang’s series of erotic photography, entitled “Gentle Vulnerability” is a commentary on the ongoing concerns of womankind in her continuous struggle to shed her stereotypical, objectified view of femininity as it has been depicted by the media-culture of our western society. He presents his images artistically, with the skills of a fashion photographer, but without the entourage of a large production crew. Working alone with his models he produces visual, thought-provoking statements of irony, sadness, beauty and sometimes humour, always creating powerful images of very high production value.
