Eight Hours in Cancun

Quick: You have only eight hours to spend in Cancun. What do you do? Oh, and you’re not a college kid on spring break. It’s not a tough question when you know all the wonderful offerings of this white-sanded, brilliant-beached paradise has to offer. If you have a few hours to spend because of a business meeting or layover, consider yourself lucky because there’s still plenty to see! And next time, plan a longer vacation.

While it is still cool in the morning, begin by going to check out the Mayan ruins at Ruinas del Ray, a small Mayan fishing village. Since the bigger ruins will take you all day to visit, Ruinas del Rey is a great place to see some history of this incredible land in a short amount of time. After the ruins, a perfect stop is Xcaret. This “eco-archaeological theme park” features brilliant examples of the local flora and fauna, more on the history of the Mayans and ruins to explore, an aviary, an aquarium, and a nursery for baby sea turtles. If you have time later (doubtful), come back at night for performances of dance, music, and drama. Incredible!

After all that learning, it’s time to get wet. While scuba diving tours are day-long commitments, you can still find plenty of ways to enjoy the water. On Isla Mujeres, you can visit Dolphin Discovery. After a short class, you can swim with the well-trained dolphins. This excursion only takes about one hour altogether. While there, take advantage of the water slides, rides, and pools. If you want to sacrifice another excursion and stay here, make sure to go snorkeling with the amazing tropical fish, rays, and sharks (don’t worry, they’re tame).

Next, hit the beach. The best ones are fronted by the big hotels and resorts but are on public property. Politely go through the lobby and head for the sand. Mujeres Bay is great for swimming. If you want to skip lunch, head to Rancho Loma Bonita. It is thirty miles south of Cancun, so this may take up a lot of your precious time. If you love horses, it’s worth it. You can rent horses and ride along the beach. It is like being in your own movie.

Finish up your day with some shopping. Try the duty free UltraFemme, featuring European jewelry, perfume, and other goodies or La Isla Shopping Village. This is a quaint open-air mall, featuring small canals and an interactive aquarium.

There’s so more to do in Cancun than knock back Tequila. While eight hours in Cancun can give you a taste, you’ll no doubt be planning a trip back in the near future. For now, enjoy your escape to this paradise, even if only for a few hours.

Enid Glasgow has spent far more time than eight hours in Cancun and recommends that you do too. When in Cancun, she recommends luxury Cancun hotels like Hotel ME by Melia.

Mexico’s stunning Baja Peninsula

Visiting Cabo San Lucas in Only a Day
By Enid Glasgow

Cabo San Lucas, on Mexico’s stunning Baja Peninsula, is a premier destination for anyone looking for the time of their lives. Two million people flock to the Baja area each year to enjoy the spectacular scenery, unbelievable beaches, and laid-back atmosphere. But what if you only have a short stint in Cabo San Lucas before your travels take you away? Don’t waste any time wandering around: get right to the best sights and enjoy Cabo to the fullest.

First, get your bathing suit on. One of Cabo’s best spots is Playa del Amor. Beauty doesn’t begin to describe it: with the Pacific on one side and the Sea of Cortez on the other, you will find the bluest water, the whitest sand, and the warmest sun. Take a cruise on a glass-bottomed boat, hang around the beach and swim or snorkel, and arrange with your driver to pick you up. All of this can be done in as little as an hour. While it’s very tempting to spend the whole day, you can see the sights and whet your appetite for more of Cabo San Lucas.

If you had time to book ahead, try the Cabo Dolphin Swim. This will take only about fifty minutes of your time, and thirty minutes of that is spent cavorting with these playful creatures. After swimming with these gentle giants, let loose. Rent an ATV and see some of the best sights in Baja. With miles of off-road tracks and beach riding, you will have the time of your life. The views are amazing – so make sure to slow down and enjoy them once in a while!

Refresh your mind and body by stopping at one of Cabo’s restaurants; known for their fresh and fun cuisine, you will enjoy an authentic taste of Mexico. Try the Sea Bass with Cilantro at Casa del Mar or Spicy Cooper’s famous Pulpos al Ajillo – octopus with garlic and Huaillo pepper. Once you’re sated, get back out there.

Work off your lunch by kayaking at the gentle Medano Beach. While you’re here, why not satisfy your need for speed again and try jet skiing, water skiing, or parasailing? Join a game of volleyball, and cool down after in the brilliant water.

Are you sick of beautiful, exotic beaches? We didn’t think so. But if you want to see them in a different light, hop on the Cabo Submarine. Enjoy tropical fish and the famous Poseidon Arch at Land’s End in the comfort of a spacious, air-conditioned semi-submersible sub. It’s almost the end of your time in Cabo. Is the fun over? Not yet. Take a sunset cruise and sip a cocktail as you look at some of the most amazing views in the world.

You could do all of this, or you could put on some sunscreen and lie on the beach all day. A perfect use of a perfect Cabo San Lucas day.

1. Cut out all junk food such as cakes, lollies, ice cream, chips, soft drinks, pizzas, deep fried and other fast foods which are loaded with fats, sugars and sodium, you will be surprised on how much weight you can lose just by cutting out these foods. If you need to snack between meals then choose a piece of fruit, raw vegetable or a few nuts to appease those hunger pangs, don’t overdo it and eat more than necessary, take a reasonable amount and enjoy it!

2. When eating a meal slow down! Chew the food slowly and you will be less likely to overeat. When you’re hungry you tend to eat quicker and therefore you are not satisfied when all the food has been eaten. One of the biggest problems we face is that we just don’t seem to know when to stop and this is where the problem of gaining weight escalates when we keep eating.

3. Ensure that you have a large satisfying breakfast and you will find that you have no inclination to eat between meals. As the day progresses your activity will not be so intense and starts to wind down towards evening. When you are active the body converts fats consumed during the day into energy to burn up the calories, however when you are not as active the fat does not convert to energy and is stored in the body as fat.

4. Variety is the spice of life, so don’t go and eat the same foods every day. There’s no need to! When you try new foods it is also great for your digestive health.

5. Eat fresh! Although it is sometimes hard financially to eat all fresh foods it will benefit you greatly in the long run. Pre-packaged foods have a much higher calorie and sodium content.

6. If you don’t have time to exercise then do not park your car opposite shops you wish to visit. Park it further away so that you will have to walk that distance. If you are buying an item or two and it is not too heavy to carry then walk to your destination. It is difficult at first when you are overweight and it will become easier as you get fitter.

Make the effort for your health’s sake.

If you keep on doing what you have always done nothing will change. Change the way you eat your food, replace some and see what happens. It works for me and maybe it will work for you.
